A Few of the Habits of Successful Dental Assistants

Patient, Dr, Assist

Patient, Dr, AssistThe main job of a successful dental assistant is to assist the dentist in any way possible. This work helps to make sure the dentist can provide high-quality and efficient dentistry to the patients who come to the office. Dental assistants need to help achieve and maintain good patient relations, making sure that all patients feel happy and cared for.

Habits of Successful Dental Assistants

Below are a few of the habits of successful dental assistants:

  • Dental assistants should know not only how a procedure is done, but why a procedure needs to take place at all.
  • Dental assistants should keep open lines of communication with the dentist. For example, be sure to ask questions like “if you’re planning a buildup, what material do you need?” This helps you be prepared.
  • You need to have a lot of initiative. For example, if you feel that there’s room for improvement, take some initiative and research techniques as well as what has been working in other dental practices.
  • Great dental assistants look at the schedule to plan ahead of time and stay organized.
  • Great dental assistants make sure to be properly trained and continuously look for ways to improve his or her skill set.
  • You should be accountable and take pride in a job well done.
  • Dental assistants should be able to communicate properly with a treatment coordinator when passing along a file. They should make sure that the patients’ needs are met.
  • A good dental assistant is open to correction and constructive criticism.
  • As a dental assistant, you need to be able to predict which instruments or supplies the dentist will need before a procedure.
  • Learning to communicate effectively with dental patients is a quality of many good dental assistants. This also means explaining treatment plans and answering questions.
  • Lastly, dental assistants need to genuinely care about dental patients and always look for ways to improve patients’ experiences at the dental practice.
