Current Challenges Facing Dentists

A dentistDentistry is a constantly changing profession. Because of the ever-improving nature of technology and, thus, the dental profession, many dentists are facing new challenges. Between office issues and patient care, to money concerns and lack of support, dental practices all over the country are being affected.

Current Challenges Facing Dentists

Below are a few of the biggest challenges currently facing dental practices today:

  • Student Loans – Student loans for dental degrees can be incredibly high and can often take years or even decades to fully pay off. It’s a misconception that older dental practices have all student loans paid off, but in reality, it can take upwards of twenty years to be completely out of debt. When you combine increasing tuition costs with student loans, this is a clear challenge currently facing dentists.
  • Corporate Dentistry – Corporate dentistry is one of the main challenges facing dentists today. There are a few large brands that currently offer a wide variety of services that include household goods, clothing, groceries, yard care needs, and optometry services. These brands are planning to incorporate dental services as well. These types of companies are usually able to offer services at a much lower cost, putting private dental practices at risk.
  • Lack of Support – Lastly, many dentists have expressed that they believe that dental schools should be offering more support to graduating dentists. These dentists believe that dental schools should be better at helping newly graduated dentists find jobs and become established in the dental field. This lack of support may threaten the success of future dental school graduates in the coming years.

Just because challenges exist doesn’t mean they can’t be overcome. One of the best ways to take the pressure off is to hire professionals to take over some of your responsibilities. This can include dental consultants, marketing specialists, and insurance credentialing experts.
