How To Avoid Office Gossip In Your Dental Practice

This problem is usually the result of an office in which employees feel left out of the loop or unaware of what’s going on in the office. It’s normal to attempt to fill in any gaps of information. This makes it especially important to keep the lines of communication open in your dental practice.

Spreading Rumors In The Workplace

Not keeping your employees up-to-date about things that will directly affect them, or having a lack of accountability in the office will increase the odds that gossiping will find its way into your office. If employees feel included in the goings on of the practice, they’ll be less likely to make assumptions. Encourage your staff members to take accountability for their own actions and to help keep one another accountable.

Gossip and rumors are damaging to your practice in a few ways. For example, these activities will take time away from patients who deserve undivided attention from both you and your staff. Additionally, they will distract from tasks that need to be done and calls that have to be made. Not only will harmful rumors and gossip damage the effectiveness of individual employees but it will also devastate your team as a whole.

Stop Gossip In Its Tracks

  • Have Clear Expectations – Your office policy manual should clearly outline your expectations and your practice’s code of conduct. Make it clear that office gossip and rumors will not be tolerated. Hold regular performance reviews to discuss these issues.
  • Encourage Staff – Teach your employees to hold each other accountable. Let them know that proof of gossip and rumors will result in a warning or other disciplinary action.
  • Take A Stand – Encourage your staff to avoid engaging in gossiping and rumors. Teach them that it’s ok to disengage in a conversation they aren’t comfortable with.

The success of your practice has a lot to do with the effectiveness of your staff. It’s important that they work as a team and can trust one another and you.
