Successfully Relating to Your Dental Patients

Dentist and patientEven if you provide the best in dental care, it’s still important to know how to properly relate to and communicate with your dental patients. A visit to the dentist can be stressful for many people and being able to help put your patients at ease can do a lot to boost loyalty and increase referrals to your office.

How to Relate to Dental Patients

Below are a few tips to try when attempting to better relate to and communicate with your dental patients:

  • Create the right atmosphere – It’s important to make sure that your dental office is professional, comforting, and upbeat. Any personal issues should be left at home and the needs of the patients should always come first. Try to remember the names of your patients and details about them. This will help patients feel bonded to you and your staff.
  • Make sure staff is on board – Make sure your staff knows to be compassionate, positive, and comforting. When discussing patients’ progress, let your staff know to be reassuring and let patients know that they’re in good hands at your dental practice. If patients ask questions to staff about their dental care, make sure that the staff refers these questions to you. Non-treating personnel should not be making personal recommendations or diagnoses to patients.
  • Use the right language – Try not to ‘talk over’ your dental patients. Use simple words and phrases when discussing their dental health with them. Using clinical terms may cause them to become overwhelmed or confused about their diagnosis or the treatment. Allow patients to voice concerns and ask questions and answer them as thoroughly as possible.
