Tips on Dealing with Dental Career Burnout

Woman stressedWe all go through periods of time when we question if we’ve made the right decision. Additionally, career burnout is common no matter what field you’ve chosen to go into. If you’re a dentist who dreads going into work in the morning, no longer enjoys treating patients, or feels like quitting dentistry altogether, you may simply be dealing with career burnout.

If you don’t deal with this stress and burnout quickly and properly, you may end up making a decision you’ll later come to regret.

Dealing with Career Burnout

Below are a few things you can do to help deal with your feelings of stress and burnout:

  • Talk to close friends or family – Discuss your feelings with trusted friends and family who can be objective. Avoid discussing the problem with the people in your life who may feel the need to ‘fix’ the problem. Instead, confide in those who will allow you to air your frustrations and unload your problems for a bit. This can prove to be quite cathartic.
  • Take plenty of breaks – Find a way to give yourself little breaks throughout the day. Whether this is a longer lunch break, leaving the office for a bit, reading a book, or even taking a nap, it can provide a release. You’ll likely be able to return to work feeling more invigorated and motivated.
  • Get more exercise – Exercising releases endorphins, which are known as ‘feel-good’ hormones. Even if you can only find a few minutes a day to get more exercise, you can still feel these benefits. This is also a great way to stay healthy and fit!
  • Get enough sleep – Lastly, it’s been proven that getting a good night’s sleep can impact your overall happiness with life. The ideal amount of sleep is 8 hours a night. Getting enough sleep will help you put things in perspective, clear your mind, and feel more satisfied with life.

Burnout can feel overwhelming, but it’s possible to get back to where you were before. If you’re experiencing burnout, it’s important to delegate some of your tasks in order to make sure you’re properly caring for your emotional and physical needs. Here at Dental Insurance Credentialing, we’re happy to take some of the responsibility off of your shoulders so that you can get back to the parts of dentistry that you enjoy!
